Casey Black - Integrating Stakeholders Into Alaskan Caribou Management: An Anthropologically Informed Approach to Wildlife Conservation
I am extremely grateful to receive a Biodiversity Institute Graduate Student Enhancement Grant to conduct vital research that aims to promote a more collaborative approach to wildlife management and the conservation of biodiversity within Alaska. This support from the Biodiversity Institute will help fund travel to Alaska so that I am able to directly interview the stakeholders involved in the management of caribou, a keystone species in Alaskan biodiversity and culture. My MA thesis will use analytical methods from anthropology to assess stakeholder integration in caribou hunting regulations, which I find extremely important in any conservation efforts that involve complex relationships between people and the environments in which they live. I am excited and thankful for the opportunity to share the results of this research with the public and I look forward to encouraging conversations about the many ways that anthropology can inform wildlife conservation.

Objective:
The objective of this MA thesis is to assess the integration of stakeholder knowledge into caribou conservation and management in Alaska, with the goal of highlighting the validity and importance of collaborative approaches to wildlife management and biodiversity conservation. The other primary objective of this thesis is to further understand the diversity present within human-environmental relationships through the process of agent-based modeling programs that simulate caribou hunting by Dene (Athabascans).
